William Oliphant papers, 1808-1832.

Chiefly business and legal papers re sales of slaves identified by name, many of whom Oliphant purchased, ca. 1809-1816, in Maryland from residents in the Counties of Baltimore, Caroline, Kent, and Somerset, as well as the Virginia Counties of Fairfax and Halifax, and elsewhere; names of many of these slaves appear on an inventory completed following Oliphant's death in 1827, although a few receipts show sales of slaves in S.C., including one dated 25 May 1814 which involved the sale of "Dick (an african)" to William Garrett. Other expenses represented include settlement of the estate of [Oliphant's father, William?], "A True and Perfect Inventory of the Estat[e of ...] [text missing] Oliphant Deceased, 9 Dec. 1817," a document docketed as "Estate of W[illia]m Oliphant"; and business ledger pages listing expenses of "Key and Oliphant," May 1818 - Mar. 1823, listing various dry goods typically found in a general store. Oliphant's estate in Edgefield District, S.C., upon his death in 1827, included arrangements for selling the cotton crop belonging to the estate (6 Oct. 1828); and unpaid expenses due to tavern keeper or hotelier Benjamin Frazier, 15 Feb. 1830, for "board of man and horse" on various days between 16 Dec. 1826 and 6 Sept. 1827; and expenses owed by the estate fo R.W. Bland for cider, lemonade, whiskey, punch, brandy, and other drinks consumed 1 Jan. - 27 Sept. 1827. Oliphant's will, 13 Oct. 1827, names John Hollingsworth executor, and bequeathes several slaves identified by name to his sisters and their children in the Nicholson, Burns, and Hollingsworth families; and bill, 17 Nov. 1828, from Dr. Max[imilian] LaBorde, for medical services, 14 July 1826 - 25 Dec. 1827.
